Rant (regarding Tony Stark)
Apr. 28th, 2014 03:56 pmI just went on a rant about Tony on my tumblr because a) I've been reading some fics that aren't Steve/Tony and apparently if they're not together, Steve basically hates Tony or finds him immature or rude or fake or what-the-fuck-ever and b) people keep making gif sets pointing out Tony's line about knowing all of SHIELD's secrets (via the virus he used to find out about the tesseract) in Avengers and the outcome of Captain America 2 where, well, it seems like Tony missed some dirty secrets. Which yes, he did, but some of the sets out there seem very blame-y and I'm probably just super sensitive, but don't fucking touch Tony if you don't understand him or if you don't like him. I hate people who put character hate into a fic (or gif set, I guess) at the expense of the character.
I know Tony has issues, ok. He's not an angel (figuratively or literally). He's done some shit-ass things like taking Pepper for granted (comics and MCU), not looking out for Happy (comics), locking up friends for not registering (comics). He's an alcoholic. But those issues are why he is who he is and Tony has growth and depth, even in MCU, and if you can't accept them, then just leave him alone. STOP BLAMING HIM. The sad thing is, Tony Stark would blame himself for not magically knowing Hydra had infiltrated SHIELD. He doesn't need everyone else blaming him for it, too.

(In related news, I really wish I could find some Steve/Bucky fic that's either also Steve/Tony fic or at least is Steve/Tony friendship fic.)

Supernatural wank (tl;dr)
Oct. 24th, 2013 11:54 amSo, the other night, as SPN was airing, some guy named Chad who apparently works with the WB mad some very ill-advised tweets (that account is now deleted, apparently) starting by saying that neither Cas nor Dean were bisexual and Destiel would never happen, followed by a whole bunch of other ridiculous comments that were things like "well, I wouldn't say no if it crossed my desk". I have to admit, if it wasn't queerbaiting, it came awfully close. Basically, it was tacky and fandom (particularly Destiel shippers) exploded.
For me, though, aside from the tweets being unnecessarily obnoxious (I'm pretty sure the two Ben's pulled bullshit like this too, back in S6 and S7 - man I hated those writers), the news of it didn't surprise me. 9 seasons now, and I've never expected or assumed that a slash ship would become canon or even that Dean at some point would actually come out as bi or gay. They give little tidbits (that are actually intended to be done for humor, not to actually hint that Dean is anything beyond straight), and I'm perfectly content with that. So, below, I have some more in depth thoughts on this whole situation. Mainly about how I don't understand when fandom decided it wasn't happy with fanfic anymore and how all ships must now be canon.

The thing about Doctor Who
Aug. 5th, 2013 11:11 amWhen we're criticizing the fact that the Doctor is AGAIN white and male...we are not criticizing Peter Capaldi. Maybe there are some people out there who don't like him as an actor and thus don't like him as the new Doctor. But people criticizing the casting regarding race or gender are not blaming Peter Capaldi. I am sure many of the people who are currently upset at the casting fully support him as an actor in the role and will love him once they see what he does with the role (or at that point, they may decide they don't like him as the Doctor, which is fair game). Those of us criticizing the casting choice hold no aversion toward Pete Capaldi. We take issue with the fact that a character - who by definition can look like anything - is AGAIN, for the 12th time, still only representing white males. We are upset at Moffat for his choice, for his lack of creativity (I will not make the potential bigotry comments here as other people have done better than I could and I don't know Moffat as well as many of those people making those arguments), for his pointed and decidedly sexist comments.
So please, you can love the actor, love him as the next Doctor, but do not tell other people they can't criticize the casting choice based on race or sex, do not patronize people who are disappointed because of a lack of diversity in a character who can be anyone and anything. Your actor and the institution of the Doctor are safe. But people are allowed to be upset by the great potential being lost, and upset by the creators lack of creativity in their decision-making process.
