Day 10
In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme. (Or a few!) Tell us what makes it work for you, and why it appeals to you so much. Talk about what you like to see in fanworks featuring that theme most. Feel free to include recs and examples!

I don't know if this actually qualifies as any of these, but some of my favorite things in fics include a) maintaining friendships (because I feel this way in RL about significant others and friends), b) when there is no bashing of the other half of a canon pair for the sake of the ship (like, Tony and Pepper can have a good break up, Pepper doesn't have to be written as a shrew just for Tony and Steve to be together) and c) when there is no friendship/character bashing either (I consider this separate from b mostly because of Teen Wolf fandom - too many anti-Scott fics mixed with Sterek).

this got a tad long )
mf_luder_xf: (Avengers Civil War)
You know what's hard? Trying to write a proper apocalyptic fic in Marvel 'verse. Like, Sam and Dean live in this crazy world where Hell is real and monsters will slice through your anti-demon tattoos to get in you. And yeah, they have angels and occasionally even God, and yeah, you can write happy (or sad) afterlife fics. But at the end of the day, thinking of something to destroy the earth isn't hard. Even if Sam and Dean survive or live on in Heaven, there's this whole planet of people that there's no real logical way for them to get "out".

But now, take Marvel. First of all, I like canon. I like manipulating canon to fit my story. I also like multiple parts and characters of Marvel 'verse. When I watch A: EMH, I can't help but think "Magneto would take that alien spaceship down no problem" and then I watch something X-Men related and I'm like, "Tony Stark could hack into that giant robot in like, two minutes". And so, as a writer, I can't help but think of the WHOLE of the 'verse. And I get annoyed when other authors keep it contained to one group (i.e. Avengers or X-Men or Fantastic Four) because if the world were truly in peril, the other groups would step into help, and I can't get that thought out of my head.

And so, I'm trying to think of something that can a) kill Avengers, b) kill most of the population, c) destroy the earth, and d) not be stopped by the X-Men, the Avengers, SHIELD, The Fantastic Four, and The Immortals (yes, I even feel the need to include them because they exist and so I have to try to explain why they don't feel threatened by this apocalyptic force).

And I'm just like, The Fantastic Four have steered Galactus away before. Dark Phoenix didn't destroy the world. The Earth survived Loki's attempt to take over. Like, all these massive forces that should be enough to wipe the earth's population out can be counteracted by all these beings with powers. And hell, even if they can't, they have spaceships. And super geniuses like Reed Richards and Tony Stark and Henry McCoy. They're going to find some other planet or dimension to take themselves and Earth's population to.

At this point, I'm stuck on only something Supernatural-based that can't be fought off with magnetism and technology. But even then, there's Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch and Asgard which could use the magic Sam and Dean often use to fight back.

So what would cause Tony to stare out his tower window at pure and total devastation and make it properly hopeless?

Dear fanfic authors,

Please, PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD AND ALL THAT IS HOLY stop rating/calling stories with pairings (non-canon and/or explicit sex) as "gen". That is not gen. I can allow canon pairings as gen (though I know some still object to this). But if there is explicit sex, it ain't gen (maybe if the show you're ficcing is Spartacus: Blood and Sand. Graphic sex seems to be in the general episodes.). If there is a non-canon pairing, IT IS NOT A GENERAL FICTION.

Seriously, I don't even read gen and I get annoyed. Imagine all the other readers who are noromos and gen-strictly readers. I bet they're even less pleased than me, especially when there's a surprise!pairing.

If there is a pairing but no sex, or not even kissing, rate it G. As in G FOR KIDS. Or PG if there's violence and swearing, whatever. But do not call it gen. WHY IS THIS SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND?!

Why do authors have people throwing up (be they sick or just hung over, or simply currently drinking too much) and then having sex like right after? Or worse, kissing? WITHOUT BRUSHING THEIR TEETH AT LEAST. WHYYYYYYY?? D:

EEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.

How is that remotely sexy? Or pleasant? I mean, seriously. Few things can take me out of a fic as fast as THAT.

McKay does not approve.
mf_luder_xf: (SPN Dean/Cas phone)
I get so annoyed over the constant hate of a) fans in general and b) Supernatural fans specifically. Especially since it's insulting the vast majority of people who watch a show (with a few exceptions like NCIS where maybe 1-5% of the watchers are in the actual fandom). I don't like it when actors do it, I don't like it when networks/execs do it, and I REALLY don't like it when other run-of-the-mill TV watchers or worse! other fans do it.

Yes, there are a few people out there that probably need a reality check. No actor should be attacked physically or verbally, and no fan should think stalking or obsessive love letters are ok.

But fanfic? Making YouTube vids? WHO THE FUCK CARES? I don't think that makes a person "crazy". And I'm a little sick of getting labeled as thus. More importantly, I am sick of reading in certain comms, "oh this comm is great, it's not full of those crazies from fandom" EXCUSE ME. *I* am in that comm and you know what? You'd probably consider me crazy.

Things You Should Know (about fandom):

1. Fandom is mean to be FUN.
2. I don't insult or judge your kinks, why should you judge mine?
3. Don't try to act all moral. If you're going to insult Wincest for immorality, then maybe you should look at yourself. Have you had sex outside of marriage? GASP. That's immoral! Let he among us without sin cast the first stone. Until then, GTFO.
4. If you're not interested in it, DON'T READ IT.
5. It's all FICTION. I suspect less than 1% of those who write incest would actually condone it in real life. Or do it themselves. That number may even be less than .05%. Writing doesn't mean you approve. Otherwise, the very fact that you watch a show about a serial killer (take Heroes or Dexter or any procedural for example) clearly indicates that you condone serial killers. Let's be logical, folks.
6. If you're going to insult one fandom's use of incest, why not insult them all? Why must you focus on this one? It's because it's known. The show itself mocks it. Thus, you are not showing intelligence. You are evidence of bandwagon reactions to something unknown.
7. There is a fine line between acknowledging weird or unusual and perhaps not appropriate behavior and being mean/rude. I admit, I recoil a bit when I see people with "Jensen Ackles" tattooed across their back. It's not me and it seems a bit extreme. But I am not judging the person. Do I think the action is probably not appropriate? Yeah. But it is by no means against the law and I suspect those people are in their right minds. Who hasn't done something entirely illogical or emotional? They feel a connection with that person. It's not harming you and it's not harming me. There is no need to insist on calling them crazy and then leaping to the conclusion all fans are. The same can be said for being a participant in fandom or for, more specifically, fandom kinks. I don't get mpreg at all. It's weird and not my cup of tea. SO I DON'T READ IT (referring back to #4). But if someone on my flist writes/reads it? That's ok with me. I don't call them crazy. It's entirely implausible. But I still would never call them crazy for enjoying it.

I could go on with this all day, I think. I've just had it up to HERE with Supernatural fans, people who claim to be Supernatural fans, the meta on the show, and all the others who sit back and judge the show and its fans. When I first joined fandom 5 years ago, it was fun. These days, I find it less so. The bitter in-fighting and the brutal attacks of fans (and writers/execs) makes it a hostile place to be most days. Now, I don't let someone declaring I am crazy stop me. Or even bother me most of the time (in that I don't feel ashamed or guilty). But man, is all this bullshit getting on my nerves.

So, I just want to make this clear. And please, if this bothers you, by all means defriend me. I don't want you either then if you can't accept me as a whole being and can't realize I'm not insisting you read/write it.

I got into SPN fandom with Wincest.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!! FIRST POST OF '10, HOLY CRAP.

Ok, I have a LOT of recs saved up from the past two months or so. So tonight we're starting the Dean/Castiel Recs: Part One: AU's. Read, enjoy, leave feedback!

Thursday's Child by [livejournal.com profile] strangeandcharm

If you're into D/C at all, you've probably seen or read this fic already. But it deserves to be repeated. You know how some fics within a fandom become your own personal canon? Or so popular, it's almost it's own 'verse for everyone? This is that one for me, at least. While I have had many fic I lovelovelove with this pairing, this is the one that was like a sucker punch, a good cry, and a deep longing for this fic to be canon. It's beautifully written, it hurts like hell, and it's more human than anything. And I don't just mean that because it takes place in 5x4 canon. In that sense, there are a few surprises. It'll also make you laugh (side cameos by our very own Iron Man and a few other celebs). It's long and plotty and sometimes you want to smack the boys upside the head, but it's perfect. If your heart isn't breaking for Castiel through most of this, you are colder than the Ice Queen.lol

Peanut-Butter Pumpkin Wedding Cake by [livejournal.com profile] sparseparsley

This fic, written for the [livejournal.com profile] deancastiel AU/Fusion Fic Challenge is a total comedy of errors. It's hilarious, a little angsty, and wonderful. As the reader you can't believe the two can be such idiots (and why don't they ever just ask?), but it makes for a delightful, sexy romp. If you like romantic comedies, this is your fix. And even if you don't, the characters are spot on and it's too funny to pass up.

Dean and Castiel "Snow White" Manip by [livejournal.com profile] hinky

It's rare for me to be really impressed by manips (well, aside from that fact that I can't do them at all myself), but this one is not only technically amazing, but it really captures a lovely feel. You can almost taste that dense moss and tree smell on your tongue. The light casts the perfect ambiance. And I like that there's no obnoxious glass case or 7 little men. Perfectly romantic.

Something Like A Broken Heart by [livejournal.com profile] rhymephile

Ok, I have a general distaste for anything cowboy, old west, and/or country. So it's awesome when something comes along that makes me forget all that and just enjoy the story. Dean is a Texas Ranger and Castiel is a cheap whore with a secret. There's some awesome appearances by our usual villains in this AU and as a whole, the fic works very well. Rhyme always pays attention to historical details, so you'll totally get lost (in a good way) in that.

Dream As If You'll Live Forever by [livejournal.com profile] commodoresexual

This fic just blew my mind. Dean's an ex-con who was put away for an act of stupid anger and Castiel is a mute hobo. But not everything is as it seems. There's so many wonderful cameos from all our favorite characters and a lot of surprising relationships get revealed. Castiel meanwhile is an enigma wrapped in mystery (wrapped in a taco shell?lol) who is our angel through and through. The author writes his actions, gestures, and looks so well, you can immediately picture Misha acting the story out. The backstories of both dean and Castiel are heartbreaking and believable. Seriously, you've got to read this.

Side note: I am always developing new pet peeves. Here are today's. )

Firstly, a very big, warm, and happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] biani! She is just a wonderful person, and a fabulous fan. Hope it's a good day, dear!!

Lucy angsts about her recent McShep OTPness )

Ok, all that aside, here are some (you guessed it) really good McShep fics/art of late.

1. Unconventional Heroism by [livejournal.com profile] sardonicsmiley

An IronMan AU. Yes, you heard me right. I know, I know, after ranting about everyone's sudden squee over RDJ, I go out and join the bandwagon (of Iron Man, not RDJ which I was already on, thank you very much). But I wouldn't rec it if it wasn't great. It's witty and smart, and John is to Lois Lane as Rodney is to Superman. Yes, I had to throw that in because I've never understood how Lois didn't realize Clark=Superman. Seriously, just a pair of glasses? But seriously, this fic is great--it's wonderful to see a fic where Rodney's bravery is not in question and shines through.

2. Bar Harbor's Best with fic by [livejournal.com profile] wojeleh and art by [livejournal.com profile] beeej

I love boating AU's. It's an amazing piece of art that really just brings to life the fic. Such a wonderful combination together. And really, John Sheppard on a boat. Did I mention how much I love boating AU's? Go, read! *shoos*

3. A City Seems with fic by [livejournal.com profile] thisissirius and art by [livejournal.com profile] mortari

Let's just say, the very first SGA fic I wrote? This story is what I wanted it to be. I bow to the amazingness (yes, that's a word) of [livejournal.com profile] thisissirius. A beautiful, heart-breaking tale.

4. Nevermind with fic by [livejournal.com profile] aesc and art by [livejournal.com profile] newkidfan

You have not seen art until you have seen this. The art and story flow one right into another and it will astound your mind. I simply can't rec this enough.

5. Of the Spotless Mind by [livejournal.com profile] lunabe34

A beautiful, tragic piece that broke my heart. So moving.

[Poll #971042]

I'm starting a new tag, which I'm calling fanfic rant. Now you all know I hate wankage, so this won't be that. There will never be a single fic named or person scorned because that's just rude and I'd hate it if someone did it to me. However, sometimes, I just need to ask the heavens why in God's name certain things make it into fics. Obviously, these are my opinions and I certainly don't expect everyone to agree. As usual, I invite any kind of comments arguing the other view or agreeing.

And today's topic is... )
