Review and general Stargate/XF babling

I have so many moodthemes saved that it was really hard to pick one. So I didn't at first. Sadly, that didn't work out, So I buckled down and chose. Introducing my new mood theme...it's Jack/Daniel made by
crystal_lily. I love this because they've both got such great facial expressions, and they're so cute.
And...fits right in with my little post here.

Stargate
I watched the original Stargate movie last night. It was a great start, indeed. To begin though...Kurt Russell as O'Neil. Wow. That was just too funny. And his hair!!
The character of O'Neil. Well, I guess I am a bit biased since I saw SG-1 eps before the movie, but I must say I am more partial to Richard Dean Anderson as O'Neill (can someone tell me why they changed that?). To start, while O'Neil was obviously hurting and did the military part well...he had what? Ten lines the whole movie? I mean, it was clear the movie focussed more on Jackson, but to me, I thought Kowalski would have been a better military leader in the context. The little the character did and said reminded me of O'Neill verses the real O'Neil. I did enjoy the interaction O'Neil had with the kids, though. And deciding at the end to not blow up the Stargate. Good choice, my friend.
Jackson, though. Someone told me that Michael Shanks really studied James Spader in order to get to "know" Daniel. And wow, yes. The transition of Spader-Jackson to Shanks-Jackson is practically seamless. I think my one objection is they drop off a bit on the allergy thing (after the Pilot) but I suppose a gag can only go so long. But really, the hair, the glasses, the gestures, and the overexcited talking...all spot on. I loved that.
As far as the movie...it left me feeling incomplete. I'm not sure if it was the basic plotline (which is what I like to think) or if I'm just influenced by knowing there's more in a TV series. But honestly, the movie was perfect to have a follow up TV show. I think had I seen the movie in its original time, I would have been like...well, that's great, but clearly there's not only one alien space ship in the entire galaxy, right? But, Brad Wright stepped in and thank God for that. :-D
What I really loved about the movie (besides Jackson, because he's a given), was a) the giant yak things (so funny!) and b) Ra. Seriously. I am unsure as to if there is a prettier boy in the world. And now, I don't mean pretty the way we all think of Jensen Ackles...but pretty. With the costume and make-up, I had to do a double take to make sure he wasn't a girl. But it played very well for the role because of it. One other thing--the eyes. oh, how it is always the eyes with me. But all the Goa'uld are just amazing with their glowing golden eyes. Very cool.
In general, I'd say anyone who is a sci-fi fan and hasn't seen the original movie, should. It's pretty much what you'd expect, romance included, but it's still fun and exciting. The special effects weren't as terrible as I imagined they would be, though the yak-like things made me laugh. Good music as well.
And so after watching the movie I watched the Pilot SG-1 "movie", right? And man, do I ever love Vancouver. We saw Pusher (who played a major), Daddy Scully (General Hammond), and the Russian nationalist in Tunguska/Terma--the guy Mulder goes to talk to about Krycek in the prison cell (he plays a soldier on O'Neill's team). And then the second ep, we see another XF vet (I can't remember which roles specifically) playing the infirmary doctor. I ♥ Vancouver casting.
And then slightly off topic (to the Pegasus Galaxy), do we know what Dr. Weir's "doctor" is? She's not medical nor scientist...do we know for sure what she's a doctor of?

Date: 2007-02-25 01:08 am (UTC)A few weeks into filming, Jaye Davidson got ill from flu. A doctor was called to the set to take a look at him. The doctor entered Jaye's tiny trailer, examined him and came out to talk to director Neil Jordan. The doctor asked Neil "Have you considered the possibility that she might be pregnant?". To which Neil and the other crew began to laugh. The doctor looked bemused, and was only let in on the secret a few minuets later. He felt very foolish.

Date: 2007-02-24 11:30 pm (UTC)I'm convinced it's two things: The 2nd half of the movie was badly paced and executed; and there's no Sam and Teal'c, So of course the team felt uneven. Of course I didn't realize the latter until I saw the tv show.
Also, the first scene with Daniel and Shau'ri inside the tent was so excruciatingly awkward that to this day, I can't watch it.
As for Weir, she was an international negotiator who also lectured at universities, so political sciene, maybe? I'm not sure if the show ever stated her exact subject of study.
Have you seen Teryl Rothery on X-Files yet? Or they guy who plays Maybourne on SG-1? His role on the X-files was in the peyote episode.

Date: 2007-02-24 11:43 pm (UTC)Yes, yes, exactly!! And I think you're right, it does seem off on pacing, and it didn't feel like a whole team. Which maybe it wasn't supposed to and I only think that because of the show. *shrugs* But all in all, it was decent.

That's what I was thinking (hoping), but before I ever put such a thing into a fic I wanted to know if it was ever specified. I suppose it could be history as well, but poli sci seems to fit considering she doesn't partake in the various other projects the various doctors do (anthropoly, science, langauge and such).
I knew Dr Fraiser had been on XF (I typically assume anyone I recognixe but can't place is from XF)...but wow, I hadn't realized just who she played. I don't particularily like Dr Fraiser (from the few eps I've seen) but she's prettier in SG1, for sure. And she's been in half a dozen other shows I've seen too, like Kyle XY. I remember her from there too.
Maybourne...I don't recognize that name. Is he in the first few eps?

Really? She's one of my favorite recurring characters of all time, no just in SG-1, but for all shows, ever. Then again, I didn't realize you hadn't seen a lot of SG-1. Perhaps she'll grow on you.
Maybourne...I don't recognize that name. Is he in the first few eps?
Nope. He's in one ep of season one (the one with the Tollans) if memory serves correctly, and then he's recurring through the rest of the series. His best ep was probably 'Chain of Command' in season four.
How much of SG-1 have you seen?

Date: 2007-02-25 12:30 am (UTC)Hee, Avatar, yes. I haven't seen it since I found out who the woman was, but one of these days I'll pull out my DVDs and watch it again.

Ok, I'll look for him and see if I can place him from XF. :-)
How much of SG-1 have you seen?
Oh...I might have seen 15-20 eps from all various seasons, but I've only truly focussed on the few I've watched in the past few weeks. Basically, I'm just starting. I borrowed the DVDs from family and I've gotten through the movie, the Pilot, and eps 1&2.

Date: 2007-02-25 11:20 am (UTC)Sorry for barging in here but I saw a link to this entry in my google alert. Just out of curiosity, were you thinking of writing down more of your thoughts when you go through the series? I've always loved hearing what new viewers think of old episodes (I've been watching this show for so long that it can be fun to hear new perspectives and such on it).
Anyway, yeah I saw the movie after S3 of the show and it was sort of weird to see the movie O'Neil when being so used to the TV show O'Neill. I'm glad that RDA wanted Jack to be lighter though I do love the way he still pulls in the angst (especially the few times we get into the subject of his son). I'm glad they brought over the same actors that played Kasuf and Skaara in the movie too.
I'm a big slasher for Jack and Daniel so I like seeing their origins in the movie which do shed light on their already made bond in the beginning of the TV show. I'm also a big team fan so after watching the TV show, the movie does seem lacking in that respect but I still enjoy the other dynamics shown in the movie.
Anyway, hope you don't mind me throwing my two cents in. :)

Date: 2007-02-26 05:07 am (UTC)Second...goggle alert? I got a google alert? I didn't that could happen. Cool.
And yes! I will be making more posts. I can't guarantee how often, but whenever I see an ep that I have something to comment on...I'll comment on it. I do that. *laughs at self*

I haven't chosen any pairing for SG1 yet (unless you count the fact that I am an avid Cameron/Sheppard xover fan), but I can definitely see the basis for both a slash relationship and their great friendship with the movie.
Stop by anytime!

Date: 2007-02-24 11:41 pm (UTC)Why the change to O'Neill - I remember hearing about that, but I can't remember the exact reason. I think it was a sort of subtle indication that the O'Neill of the show was going to be pretty different than the one in the movie (Richard Dean Anderson wouldn't come on board until they let the character lighten up *g*). But I could be misremembering. The answer is out there somewhere, in interviews or articles or possibly DVD commentaries....
Weir is a diplomat trained in international relations/politics. The 'Dr.' refers the fact that she has two Ph.D.s, so basically she's a Doctor of whatever those degrees were in.
no subject
Date: 2007-02-24 11:46 pm (UTC)Yeah, I was just curious if they'd ever mentioned what her degrees were in. I think at this point I'm going to settle on poli sci since it seems there hasn't been an actual mention of what they are. I suppose sociology could work as well...
no subject
Date: 2007-02-24 11:51 pm (UTC)Weir apparently taught poli sci at some university once upon a time, so I think it'd be safe to say that's one of her degrees. Sociology is a good one. I think you really can get degrees in international politics etc., though.

My friend and I have half a mind to go ride the skytrain just to go past Bridge Studios with our faces plastered against the skytrain window. Just 'cause... ya know... ♥

Date: 2007-02-25 06:05 pm (UTC)I have the Stargate movie sitting in my hard drive for a while but haven't watched it yet, don't really know why... Maybe I just think it's gonna be weird seeing two of my favorite SG-1 characters played by different actors. :D
I really should watch it though. Oooh, and it has Mili Avital, who I absolutely love. :D
Er... have no idea what's Weir's doctor is. *is puzzled*

Date: 2007-02-26 04:31 am (UTC)LOL Yeah I phrased it badly. I emant what her doctorate is in.
And OMG that icon!! I just watched that ep the other night and considering my name...I cracked up.
