I remember watching the Stargate movie (before I ever saw the tv show) and being extremely impressed by the concept, premise and character of Daniel Jackson, but feeling that the rest of the movie was lacking.
I'm convinced it's two things: The 2nd half of the movie was badly paced and executed; and there's no Sam and Teal'c, So of course the team felt uneven. Of course I didn't realize the latter until I saw the tv show.
Also, the first scene with Daniel and Shau'ri inside the tent was so excruciatingly awkward that to this day, I can't watch it.
As for Weir, she was an international negotiator who also lectured at universities, so political sciene, maybe? I'm not sure if the show ever stated her exact subject of study.
Have you seen Teryl Rothery on X-Files yet? Or they guy who plays Maybourne on SG-1? His role on the X-files was in the peyote episode.
