Fall 2012 TV

With Fall TV fast coming up, I figured I'd finally see what new shows are happening and what I might need to add. And of course, I can't but help post some very basic thoughts. :P
666 Park Avenue: Terry O'Quinn=awesome. However, a supernatural apartment complex? I think I'll pass unless my flist (or tumblr) tell me it's a can't miss show.
Last Resort: Ok, legit the premise sounds wonky for a TV show and I'm not sure how they can keep it up for more than a season or two, but I love Dichen, it has an African American lead and - wonky as it is for TV versus a movie - it's still like an anti-24 under sea/in Hawaii. I'll try it. Also, Robert Patrick.
Mistresses: Based on the series description, I really don't understand the title and it sounds like it could be interesting...or really boring and a corporate version of Desperate Housewives. We'll see if it sounds better come midseason.
Nashville: Sounds like Country Strong with a bunch of white southerners and Hayden Panettiere. Which, I love Hayden (and Eric Close), but I'm not a big fan of country music, so probably not.
Red Widow: Jamie Ray Newman! But damn, the plot sounds complex and not in a cool way (aka sci-fi). Pass, probably.
Zero Hour: Wasn't there once a show called this before? Or something similar? That aside, it's like The Da Vinci Code meets National Treasure meets Kolchak. It's a midseason show, so I think I'll wait for final judgment, but it sounds intriguing at least. Although I'm annoyed that in the series description, they needed to specify that the guy is joined in his search for his wife by a "sexy FBI agent". *rolls eyes*
Elementary: Going in, I have really mixed feelings about this. BBC Sherlock aside (since I don't watch that version), I feel like, not only have they potentially spoiled the original material by changing the gender of one of the characters - my biggest complaint actually stemming that they changed the doctor to a woman instead of the slightly offbeat genius - it feels now more generic by doing so. That is, there are already a number of shows - crime and otherwise - that feature the detective with the female doctor. I mean, The X-Files (logic and nurturing vs the brilliant genius who sort of drags her into it), Bones, The Mentalist (Jane being the genius, Lisbon being his grounded backup), and probably several others I'm forgetting at the moment. I don't like that I can already predict years (if it runs that long) of UST and the only reason why they would get together is because he's a he and she's a she (versus a gay Sherlock Holmes spin). All that said, I love shows about genius people even as they are ridiculously predictable to me and Lucy Liu is pretty damn awesome so...I'm inclined to give it a try.
Friend Me: YAWN.
Vegas: It's like Dallas meets The Sopranos meets a generic crime show. It sounds dull.
Made in Jersey: Sounds like a super dull, generic law show. Pass.
Arrow: I wasn't going to tune in because Justin Hartley will always be my Green Arrow, but...who am I to resist super hero shows? And they just signed on John Barrowman for a recurring role. I really can't resist THAT. Plus, Katie Cassidy is back on my CW - as Black Canary. I just hope it stays with some level of darkness that Supernatural has, yet avoids the pitfalls of SPN's recurring themes, all while staying away from the cheesiness of Smallville. And I hope there's more women in it.
Beauty and the Beast: What even. No. Also, I don't think I could stand more of Kristin Kruek. Sorry, but Smallville just turned me off of you forever.
The Carrie Diaries: I have no interest in prequels unless it's about another generation (which this isn't) or some reimagined super hero past (ala Arrow and Smallville). So, sorry, no.
Cult: Umm, it sounds like someone decided to make a show about Supernatural fandom and have all the fans be psychos and serial killers. Or something. We'll see if it sounds less mocking come midseason.
Emily Owens, MD: Yawn, boring doctor show.
The Mob Doctor: ER meets The Sopranos. I don't even...how does that premise stay in play for multiple seasons? Whatever, it's a doctor show anyway, so I don't really care.
The Following: Um, what? I'd believe the premise of one serial killer somehow uniting all other serial killers for like, a two-parter Criminal Minds episode (in fact I think they have done that), but not for a whole show. And I can't handle Kevin Bacon, sorry.
Revolution: I wouldn't even care what it was about, it's from Kripke and JJ Abrams. Of course, I'm watching. That said, the premise intrigues me, though the comments on how it's going to be a "patriot themed" show makes me think it's less a future thinking show and more a Bush-era one (ala 24). As well, trying to keep it light and less dystopian? Why? Seriously, bring back Dark Angel, please. Also, if the secret of the blackout isn't an EMP (probably set off by a rogue government or terrorist group), you all have the right to mock me for a day. ALthough Kripke's talk about physics does seem to suggest a non-EMP reason, the fact that it's "plausible" makes it seem likely.
Chicago Fire: Sorry, I have even less interest in shows about firehouses than I do about most doctor shows.
Do No Harm: So, it's like half supernatural, half split-personality? No matter what, I really don't care about a Jeckyll and Hyde-like TV show. Doctors and crazy psycho killers combined means I would be too grossed out to watch, anyway.
Infamous: Sounds a little too romantic-drama based and not enough legit plot that is unique. Pass.
Hannibal: I can do the psychiatrist serial killer thing, though I'm unsure of how the plot can hold up past a season. It's a maybe.
Obviously, I left some things out. I really don't care about comedies so they're just a general wash of "won't watch". Same with reality TV.
So what does that leave me with? (All times central.)
Monday: Revolution (9pm), Castle (9pm)
Tuesday: NCIS (7pm), Hart of Dixie (7pm), NCIS:LA (8pm)
Wednesday: Arrow (7pm), Criminal Minds (8pm), Supernatural (8pm)
Thursday: Last Resort (7pm), Elementary (9pm)
Friday: Fringe (8pm)
Sunday: Once Upon A Time (7pm), The Mentalist (9pm)
And of course, come January, White Collar and Suits will be added back in. November sees a final few Rizzoli&Isles eps, too.
Things I am pleased about: Fringe no longer conflicts with Supernatural!! Only 4 new shows, so less to battle with time spent on schoolwork.
Things I am displeased about: The Mentalist moved to Sunday night which is the one night I work at my second job and last year, no one posted episodes on my dling site AND CBS doesn't put The Mentalist episodes up online. Lots of time conflicts which means more episodes being watched online or dled. Also, I am still bitter about Terra Nova being canceled. Fuck you, FOX.
All info on eps taken from here (mostly).

Date: 2012-09-07 02:32 am (UTC)Yeah, I don't watch sitcoms at all. I hate that half hour format, and they're usually stupid.

Date: 2012-09-09 04:42 am (UTC)I ended up watching the pilot of The New Normal on Video on Demand and it was funny. I'm going to have to give it a try when it premieres. I wonder how long it will take me to get bored. And after some research, I'm going to have to try out Partners. I had no idea it was based on the creators of Will and Grace. I can't even imagine that one will live up to expectations.
OMG--The pilot of Revolution was pretty damned good. I was worried I'd be disappointed. I'm curious to see how the next episode turns out. You just have to love On Demand.

Date: 2012-08-29 08:02 pm (UTC)It's got some pacing issues and the lead character is a bit dull right now (which made me sad as I love Matt Davis), but the hints we were given by the creator about what's to come are really exciting. It's actually fairly respectful to the fans, the in-show producers basically say that "it's not all the fans, but some of them are completely bonkers", which I loved.
There's also the promise that the show is to utilise social media in a never before seen fashion, so it's going to be highly interactive, so it's pretty interesting based on that alone.
Anyway. Just figured I'd give some feedback on that one as I'm already a wee bit invested.
I haven't really got any plans on what I want to watch - bar that - as yet. I should pick up some new stuff though, so far I've only got the new season of The Vampire Diaries to watch. Also Game of Thrones, but that isn't til March. Nothing really leaps out at me this year though.

Date: 2012-08-30 05:25 am (UTC)I haven't even heard of half of these shows. I need my fall TV preview from EW and TV Guide to make a list. Or did I miss them already? Gah, I have so much to do and we're moving on Sept. 22, so I'm going to miss a bunch of premieres regardless. I'll have to catch up on On Demand.
At least you're still watching Show. This pleases me.

Date: 2012-09-07 02:26 am (UTC)I don't know if those guides came out yet. That's why I started looking for something online. The link is actually really helpful.
Haha! Have you seen the promo they just put out? It looks interesting at least. Though I suspect half the fandom is still bitching about how it involves angels and Hell again.

Date: 2012-09-07 02:59 am (UTC)I went looking to see if the Fall previews had come out yet and neither EW nor TV Guide has them out yet. Grrr! I need to plan my fall season watch! I do it every year -- usually EW has a pull-out calendar when everything airs so I can highlight and make a chart. I take this TV watchin' seriously.
I watched the promo about an hour ago, actually! Fuck the constant, constant whining and bullshit of this goddamn teenager fandom, srsly. I want mytharc and continuing storylines, not lame MotWs like Season 1! GOD. Also, SAM AND DEAN ARE NEVER GOING TO KISS, OKAY KIDS? Get over it! Ugh. Anyway! I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with the whole purgatory and Cas thing, as well as this Kevin Tran thing, and how it all ties together with Crowley.

Date: 2012-08-30 02:23 pm (UTC)I want to be excited about Revolution but I just can't muster it, for all the reasons you mentioned. Plus the tagline? The thing the main character says about the world dying being the moment she knew she was alive, or whatever? I almost gag every time I hear it. But . . . Kripke! PLUS Abrams! It'll either be stupendous or a train wreck.
I've seen precisely one preview for that 666 Park Avenue show and was convinced it's a series-long version of Rosemary's Baby. Which, no. No no no not okay, not ever, no. (Erm, but okay so I looked it up and apparently it's based on some other book. But the thought alone is enough to turn me off.)

Date: 2012-09-07 02:22 am (UTC)Ah, see, I'm not a reader or watcher of horror so 666 sounded original.lol Ah, TV and their remakes.

Date: 2012-09-01 05:10 pm (UTC)Still really conflicted whether I should try to watch Elementary or not... I really do like the BBC version, but I wonder if at some point enough has been done to the source material...

Date: 2012-09-07 02:20 am (UTC)I'm hearing good things about Elementary on tumblr so I'm definitely going to try it, see how it goes. But I agree.
