I will never understand why all fics on fanfic.net seems to have an exorbitant amount of exclamation points! Everyone and most statements seem so unnecessarily excited. It is honestly so hard read any fics there!

I think I can explain that. I just finished reading the updated version of Ursula K. Le Guin's Steering the Craft: A 21st Century Guide to Sailing The Sea of Story. One of the things she talked about in the book was how students today aren't taught proper grammar and the tools of English, like punctuation. She calls out the exclamation point in particular being used in place of both periods and question marks.

Yeah, but AO3 fics - as a whole - don't use as many. I honestly think that the fics that remain on fanfic.net simply are the really shitty ones. Like I know I never hit the fanfic.net surge and apparently good fics were there, but I think those good writers packed them up onto websites or LJs or just deleted them, leaving only the bad fics behind. And new writers who added their fics there later just weren't as good (and maybe in that sense they are just younger writers not taught to not overuse exclamation points).

Actually, I feel like, the longer Ao3 is around, the more bad!fic gets put up. Which is certainly elitist of me, I'm just whining because I'm running out of the well-written IC fic for POI already and I am not sure I am willing to stomach the exclamation points.lol

I can't really disagree with you there. I'm starting to see more bad fic in the Avengers fandom as well. I used to think that fanfic.net was just where you went for bad fic.
