Are you affected by any of it? Beyond attempting to look up some census data today and the website being down, I'm not affected. So I'm far more angry than scared. The sad thing is, until the next election (if then), nothing is going to change. We'll get a short term budget for the rest of the year in a few days (probably) and then it'll all happen again next year. Part of the problem of annual appropriations. :P
I would be effected by it if they decided not to write Social Security checks. Luckily, I still got my disability this morning, so, not so far. I'm scared for the future, though. And this annoys me a lot. I wasn't old enough to remember politics in 1995 (being in middle school), so I didn't know they could do this.
Ah, yeah. Social Security will continue on, as does Medicare and even student loans. Just like the USPS which is self-run, those organizations are already funded and funded separately so they won't go away. It affects mainly EPA, NASA, federal employees (civilian). The FDA, too. But like, meat inspectors and TSA still work. So, most of us won't feel the hurt. Unless we're on WIC. :P
And yeah, I was too young back then to really understand, but it's something I've studied before and so am mainly angry. I think there's been a shut down 17 times? Not common, obviously, but not enough for the sky to fall in. At least, not for those of us not dependent upon the government for supplemental nutrition or say, indication that an asteroid is coming (as Jon Stewart pointed out, lol).
I can't imagine what you feel. I'm in Europe and I'm kinda frightened by the whole thing, but apparently it's happened before, so hopefully it should work out sooner than later.
Yeah, it's not really scary for me. Hell, I have visions of West Wing's S5 episode where Bartlett shuts down the government and then proceeds to PWN all the Republicans who let it go so far. Sadly, I don't think Obama=Barlett right now.
I'd be a lot more scared/upset if I was one of the federal employees currently laid off/sent home.
