1. How about a brief introduction?
MF Luder aka Lucy, 22, avid fangirl, sci-fi geek, and lover of pretty, shiny things. Officially adopted by
bitter_crimson's amazing family. ;-)
2. What got you into fan fiction?
The fanfic folder at Haven. Everyone kept talking about fanfic and reccing stories and after about a month, I gave in and read one. And then got hooked.
3. What kind of fan fiction do you write?
Mainly slash. Lots of drama, angst, some romance. Some gen, and crossovers.
4. Do you write for the same pairings/characters?
Mainly. I've done both Mulder/Scully and Mulder/Krycek. A crossover with Dean Winchester/Peter Petrelli vs the two sets of brothers with each othe.
5. What is your most popular fic/muse and why do you think people like it so?
Heaven Can Wait, by far. I think most people are intrigued by the circumstance of Dean being reborn, defying even Heaven's powers to get back to his brother.
6. Forget other people, what is the fanfic/post/prompt you've written that you're most proud of?
That's a much tougher question. Of course I'm proud of HCW despite the fact that it's on seemingly-permanent WIP status, but I'd say Proof is my number one, followed by Watching For Reindeer and Rush. Seriously, tough call, actually.
7. Do you find writing easy? Hard? What aspects do you struggle with?
It really depends. On my mood, on time, on fandom...
What I tend to struggle most with is characterization. With the seeming exceptions of Kyle and Nathan Petrelli.
8. Write a few sentences of your favourite pairing or character.
I couldn't help but wonder when Lori and Hillary would realize they weren't so far off on their accusations of 'bromance'. An odd term; one of Lori's many constructs. Bro not referring to a short term for brother, but more a comrade, a close friend. And the obvious take on romance.
Declan and I were friends, though I would never call what we were a romance. But the general concept was correct. And sometimes, I wondered when Declan's failure to lie convincingly to Lori was going to give us away.
9. Are there any fan fiction trends/clichés you hate?
Many cliches, sure. And I really don't like mpreg.
10. Are you guilty of any of the trends you hate?
Cliches? Probably. I try to avoid them. Take The Temple where I purposely avoided the happy ending to "aliens made them do it".
11. What was the first fandom you wrote for? Do you still write for it?
The X-Files. And no, not currently.
12. Name your OTPs and explain what it is about them you love to write.
Mulder/Scully: Come on, it's entirely epic. The greatest romance, ever, IMO.
Mulder/Krycek: Both of them are so fucked up and brilliant and dark. The ultimate painful OTP.
Sam/Dean. Similar to M/K, these boys are so messed up. Their lifestyle, their destinies...it all combines to be one tragic love affair.
Nathan/Peter: Their love is unparalleled. So many people (writers, fans) view Nathan as one-dimensional. He's either a scumbag politician who was ready to throw the world to the wolves, or the man with undying love for Peter. I love exploring the intricacies. Same reason I've always loved Krycek, CSM and now Ruby, I love Nathan. And Peter is just fun to make even more angsty.
Kyle/Declan: Have you watched this show? They have bromance, dude! And Kyle with his fresh look, it's so nice to write an unjaded point of view.
Sheppard/McKay: They way they bitch and snark is amazing. Their dynamic, the military backing up science, Rodney's hidden bravery, John's selflessness...quite the duo.
Sam/Jack: Don't hate me, but I kind of consider them the poor man's Mulder and Scully. Personally, I love to play with all the reasons they can't be together, even if it frustrates me while watching the show.
13. What would you call your writing style?
Plot-oriented. Other than that, I'm open to suggestions.
14. Do you read other people's writing? If so, what do you find yourself reading the most?
Fics that really get the characterization. I'm often jealous. lol Beautiful, lyrical, entertaining writing. Good porn. Mystery. Standing out from the crowd.
15. Name one thing you'd love to write but have been too afraid or too shy to do.
I write whatever I want.
16. Do you feel uncomfortable taking criticism? Or worse, do you have the dreaded bloated ego?
Wow, way to be unbiased, questions! *makes face*
Depends on my own mood and if I thought it was good. My own frustration level figures highly in this. I'm always up for concrit, but a general hand-waving of 'this sucks' will never make me happy.
17. When you write, is there anything that helps?
Music (For example, I listened to one Philip Glass song on repeat when writing Proof. I've done this for a few other fics, too). Unlimited time. An unusual setting (For example, I wrote the first 3 parts of Ides of the Mothman in someone's backyard at night, with only a porch light. It really added to the atmosphere and without internet to distract me, I just kept going).
18. What inspires you?
Again, music. Song lyrics, mainly. Movies. Hell, even plays!
19. Lastly, how would you sum up your fan fiction experiences and you as a writer?
Most of my experiences have been good. I think that bringing my laissez-faire attitude to fanfic writing as well as fandom in general is what keeps me going. It's not that I don't care. But come on, even the people who get 90 comments wish they were the people who got 5 pages worth and fanfic awards. So really, it's all relative, isn't it? And it's not like fanfic writing is my career. I suspect in a few years I'll have to give it up entirely when I get into RL and have a full time job.
And while we're on the topic of fanfic...a few recs:
Zelenka's Still by
auburnnothenna (Gen)
A hilarious day and a half in the life of Atlantis which all starts with the Atlantis still being blown up, finding Ancient porn, and eventually ending with Weir singing and Bate's red polka-dotted boxers showing, forever damaging Rodney's retinas.
Aegis by
leahwoof (McShep)
A beautiful, painful story where ancient gene carriers have special abilities and John wears gloves on his hands to protect his past and keep away the things he fears.
