Ahhh, haha, see, I was raised on Trek. So when I read that article and J. J. was all talking about how he abhors all things Trek, it made me feel a lot more apprehensive about the film than I had felt previously. But then I read that he had a lot of Trek fans with varying levels of hardcore-ness in his team, and that made me feel better about it. Plus, unlike many really hardcore fans (of various things), I usually have a pretty open mind when it comes to reboots of old franchises, and reworking old mythos. I find it exciting and fun to see what new takes you can come up with on the same basic concepts. So, in that respect, I am hopeful and excited about the film. And many other parts of the article did make me more psyched about it, too.
If you ever do watch old Trek, I vote you watch The Next Generation. It's the absolute best, IMO.
Then again, I suppose it depends on what you're watching for. The Original Series had the most camp and ridiculousness. It's really fun to watch if you're looking for campy, silly old sci-fi, or probably if you're high. XD
TNG, the next one, is the best and most serious. It had the most effective tackling of social issues, was the most groundbreaking, had the best cast, and had the best plots, IMO.
The next one, Deep Space Nine, was good for most of its run, sometimes up there on par with TNG, though I thought it got awful near the end. It concentrated on issues of religion and war a lot more than TNG, and was a very different show from most of the other Treks. (Every ST except DS9 is set on a ship that travels throughout space. DS9, on the other hand, is set on a stationary space station. Right away, this sets the show and the types of stories they can tell apart. But I loved it, probably my second favorite after TNG.)
Then there was Voyager, which was usually good, but never got as good as either TNG or DS9. Like DS9, I lost interest in it near the end and stopped watching. But unlike DS9, where I did that b/c the plots got really bizarre, with Voyager I mostly was just ...bored.
And then with Enterprise, the newest incarnation, I sadly never watched much. Saw a few early episodes and was bored and way turned off by certain aspects of the show. (Probably some of it was due to stuffy Trek purism, lol, which may again be an issue with this movie, but maybe not, since Enterprise was actually supposed to be set in the same universe.) But then I heard from a bunch of sources that it got much better in its final season. Eh. IDK if it's worth watching two crappy/mediocre seasons to get to one good one.
ANYWAY LOL YOU ARE PROBABLY NOT INTERESTED IN ANY OF THIS. BUT, THESE ARE SOME OF MY GENERAL THOUGHTS ON TREK. SO, WATCH TNG IF YOU WANT AWESOMENESS. WATCH TOS IF YOU WANT CAMP. WATCH DS9 IF YOU LEAN MORE TOWARD INTEREST IN RELIGION/WAR SRS BZNS. THE OTHERS I'D SAY ONLY WATCH IF YOU ENJOY ANY OF THE ABOVE. LOLLLLLLLLLL.
