So, the other night, as SPN was airing, some guy named Chad who apparently works with the WB mad some very ill-advised tweets (that account is now deleted, apparently) starting by saying that neither Cas nor Dean were bisexual and Destiel would never happen, followed by a whole bunch of other ridiculous comments that were things like "well, I wouldn't say no if it crossed my desk". I have to admit, if it wasn't queerbaiting, it came awfully close. Basically, it was tacky and fandom (particularly Destiel shippers) exploded.

For me, though, aside from the tweets being unnecessarily obnoxious (I'm pretty sure the two Ben's pulled bullshit like this too, back in S6 and S7 - man I hated those writers), the news of it didn't surprise me. 9 seasons now, and I've never expected or assumed that a slash ship would become canon or even that Dean at some point would actually come out as bi or gay. They give little tidbits (that are actually intended to be done for humor, not to actually hint that Dean is anything beyond straight), and I'm perfectly content with that. So, below, I have some more in depth thoughts on this whole situation. Mainly about how I don't understand when fandom decided it wasn't happy with fanfic anymore and how all ships must now be canon.

(Also posted on tumblr, so feel free to skip or whatever if you've read it.)

Unpopular opinions, hell yeah )

ETA: Fandom debunker uploaded all the tweets here.

This is the one that I saw pop up predominently and seemed to send fandom into a tizzy.

So, fandom is already exploding over how the show suddenly isn't focused on just the boys anymore with "quirky" characters in the background.

Now, you know me. I'm usually slow to ease into bitching about a show "jumping the shark" because I like to give the writers the benefit of the doubt. Sometimes, I never believe it does or I'll object to a few items but not tout the downfall of the whole show (for brief examples, while season 8&9 of X-Files had major problems, I never believed it "jumped the shark" (well, not until XF2) and I HIGHLY objected to Katie and I might have sworn off SGA if she had gotten pregnant and stuck around but didn't hate the whole show for that atrocity of a story arc). But when the show DOES jump the shark on characters or fucks up the writing irreversibly, I am one of the people to loudly proclaim my frustrations (see Nathan on Heroes and Castiel on SPN). I am not afraid to say I'm sick of romance or the writing was poor or dumb or whatever. Now, we can all disagree on some things (i.e. me and Cas-haters will never agree that what happened to him was deserved/good/whatever). But you can hate a character, hate a plot, and still be objective.

(Warning, spoilers for Suits 1x11 "Rules of the Game".)

So. Dear Suits fandom. )

There is currently a bill in the Senate that has bipartisan support and the backing of groups like the entertainment industry and the AFL-CIO, called S3804 the Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA,) which is seeking to ban websites based on illegal material.

Now, I'm not one to jump to censorship conclusions, but after reading into it, I thought I'd bring it to your attention.

The main goal of this bill is to allow federal courts and the government to shut down websites and even entire domains which offer up content deemed illegal. Of course, the spirit of the bill is to pursue things like Napster and various places that offer free media. But the wording is very broad.

The list is for domains "dedicated to infringing activity," which is defined very broadly — any site where counterfeit goods or copyrighted material are "central to the activity of the Internet site" would be blocked.

Many people are worried about the way the bill is phrased, that it could allow the government to blacklist many websites that are in fact legal and that offer legal services, such as mediafire, megaupload, and even YouTube. They also worry it could stall start up companies. If this bill were to pass, it would force companies like Google to block the domains as determined by the Attorney General.

I believe fandom has a stake in this. Not only do many of us stream our shows (I know some Supernatural fans found their go-to streaming place gone this week), but fanfic and vids are by their nature illegal. (Whether they should be or not is a different discussion.) Fanfic writers/vid makers/etc are not often pursued because the size of the group, as well, companies and producers recognize that it's more hassle than it's worth and that fandom helps promote their creations.

However, we on LiveJournal have experienced censoring already. The wave of problems that came when LJ transferred over control over to Russian-based ownership frightened many fans with issues of underage fanfiction. While it didn't become of the end of fandom or LJ as many thought, it did result in the Adult Content settings and a flurry of fans moving over to Dreamwidth and Archive Of Our Own.

Obviously, I have no evidence that fandom sites will end up being blacklisted. But should we give them the chance? Our creative reuse of the TV and movie characters we love is not meant maliciously. But at the end of the day, the disclaimers we attach to our stories and vids and art hold no legal merit. Copyrighted material is central to fandom's activity. By its very wording, technically, LJ, Dreamwidth, AOOO, and all those pairing specific places where you post fic fall under the criteria to be blacklisted, as well as various LJ comms or streaming websites where you get your media.

There is a petition to the Senate that this bill be stopped. I'm not going to request that you sign it. I do ask that you read it, the articles it links to discussing the bill in further detail and gain a knowledge of what this bill is. After that, if you decide that you support it, then sign the petition. But the most important thing is to be educated. This bill could be farther reaching than we could foresee, or it may simply restrict the Napsters of the world. I don't know. But don't leave it up to chance by not researching the implications.

My own disclaimers:
1. I am not a lawyer. I do not know how this could be pursued in the courts, if it could be ruled unconstitutional, or if LJ and other fandom sites could ever come under the purview of this bill.
2. I don't have any links to the big debacle of LJ, its new ownership and the underage/pornography issues. If I've misstated the basic issues here, please let me know. Also, if you have any links, feel free to share them so I can flesh this out.

Please, feel free to link your flists here or to share this information on your own LJs if you feel strongly about it.

Good Omens

So, I'm finding myself more and more enamored by this fandom. I haven't read a SPN fic in nearly a week.

As I've mentioned, Crowley/Aziraphale fills all my kinks. There's wings, and a bookish character (which in this case fills the smart/genius!kink I have), the rebellious type who really has a heart made of (mostly) gold (he was an angel once himself, after all).

What I'm finding most interesting are the descriptives. When I read the book this fall, I bought this copy which has only the drawing of Crowley. I didn't see the coordinating cover until later. I then combined that with the Crowley we see on SPN, not so much in looks, but in mannerisms.

My next experiences (first, really) with fandom were fanarts I found, mainly via SPN fandom. I stumbled across some truly talented GO fandom artists including [livejournal.com profile] linnpuzzle such as this gorgeous piece or this or this one. This is where I got my first real idea of what Aziraphale might look like. See, reading the book, I don't recall any perceptions of the angel beyond blond hair and bookish (and sort of dresses like Ducky on NCIS). Many GO artists draw the angel in a similar fashion; that is to say, slender and a trifle nerdy. Frankly, I held Michael Shanks as Daniel Jackson in my head (having no predetermined visual since this is a book and not my usual TV fandom)

Well, then reading fics this past week, I've noticed that apparently, Aziraphale is actually slightly chubby? I'm going to have to go back and reread the book to confirm, but the overwhemling descriptive of him seems to center around him being slightly pudgy, or having pudgy hands with well-manicured fingernails. Which, don't get me wrong, I like that idea, too! Otherwise, I wouldn't be such a Rodney McKay fan (in slashing him, I mean; Rodney'd be my fav character no matter what).

And then that got me thinking. Ok, so Aziraphale is slightly pudgy (and pudgy of course has varying degrees: I'd be inclined to call McKay pudgy rather than fat because David Hewlett carries his weight evenly and well, vs a man who held all his chub in his gut, I'd be more inclined to say "fat"), blond, has the smart look down, is a trifle snarky, and grows exasperated with his friend/nemesis often, but holds a fond spot for him in his heart. And Crowley is a dark-haired charmer, snarks at his chain-of-command, and who often mocks/laughs at his friend/nemesis but honestly enjoys his company.

Umm, is anyone else seeing where I'm going with this? (I really do have a thing for certain types of pairings, don't I? Opposites attract is apparently my motto for my fictional OTPs.) And then I recalled a certain movie and...

I have my perfect image of Aziraphale (minor nudity) )

So, yes. There is no real point to this post beyond sharing my revelation and image of the characters in my head with you. But, I'm curious. I don't know how many of you have read Good Omens/participate in fandom on my flist (though I know a few of you do!), but if you have/do...who would you cast to play them in a movie? What visuals have you always held of the angel and demon?

In conclusion: I LOVE GOOD OMENS. I want a TV show dedicated to these two amazing characters just so that I can see their varying escapades on my screen (yes, I know, it'd never be as good as the book, but you all know what I mean). I want a movie of the book or something. Anything to spawn more amazing art and more amazing fic. Seriously, GO is my happy place right now. ♥

Hello flisties!

So, as I mentioned, I'm feeling a bit of ennui regarding Supernatural right now. However, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] crack_van, I've discovered Good Omens as a fandom. I've been reading some great fanfics, but I'd love more. Crowley and Aziraphael hit all my buttons. Good and "evil," boy!sex, ambigous, powerful creatures, plus...ngl, the curtain!fic is absolutely doing it for me. I LOVE my angst and more so than anything else, I love apocalyptic, tragic DOOM fics. But it's nice to get to read something light-hearted and fun. Are any of you in Good Omens fandom? What are the good LJ comms? Rec me some fics, if you wouldn't mind!

Also, I'm rewatching all of SGA. And I kind of forgot a) how much I love McKay and Sheppard, and b) that I have a thing for half-humans, apparently. Why do I like inter-species sex? I don't understand. But, I do. Wings, angels, and bug!Sheppard. UNF, bug!Shep is so hot. So, if you wouldn't mind, I'd love some recs about Sheppard as in Conversion. I'm sure I've read most of them, but it's been forever, and I've got a hankering for some blue-skinned, yellow-eyed, uber powerful Sheppard and McKay sex. (I'm always slightly amused because that was the first SGA ep I watched - before even knowing what the show was - and my initial reaction was WTF is this? and since getting into the show, it's always been one of my favorite episodes.)

Here's another little tidbit I picked up. I've never been a Sheppard/Ronon slasher, but rewatching these first few season 2 eps where Ronon reacts to Sheppard's military command and emphasizes the order parts? I'm totally seeing Sheppard as Ronon's dom. Like when he says to Ronon, "I couldn't order so much as a pizza right now, but if you need it to be an order, fine. That's an order." and then Ronon does whatever he was just bitching about a moment before. I realize this is military and not sexual but, my slash goggles are firmly in place, tyvm.

Alright, I said I'd found a few vids that were gems, right? Well, here you go.

1. "Drinking With Misha"

What I love about this vid is how firstly, HE'S WEARING THE STONEHENGE OUTFIT. I think this was done the same day as the TV Guide interview? Otherwise, boy needs to stop playing chicken with his car and start spending more money on his wardrobe because he should know by now we pay attention to these things.lol I love how the interviewer flirts with him: "I'm a desperate girl..." LOL! Also, Misha's drinking. AGAIN. And they talk about Misha's chasteness. Plus, Misha says "BDSM". There's this awesome awkwardness that shines in Misha's eyes when the interview brings up Dean/Cas. But it's hilarious.

I get so annoyed over the constant hate of a) fans in general and b) Supernatural fans specifically. Especially since it's insulting the vast majority of people who watch a show (with a few exceptions like NCIS where maybe 1-5% of the watchers are in the actual fandom). I don't like it when actors do it, I don't like it when networks/execs do it, and I REALLY don't like it when other run-of-the-mill TV watchers or worse! other fans do it.

Yes, there are a few people out there that probably need a reality check. No actor should be attacked physically or verbally, and no fan should think stalking or obsessive love letters are ok.

But fanfic? Making YouTube vids? WHO THE FUCK CARES? I don't think that makes a person "crazy". And I'm a little sick of getting labeled as thus. More importantly, I am sick of reading in certain comms, "oh this comm is great, it's not full of those crazies from fandom" EXCUSE ME. *I* am in that comm and you know what? You'd probably consider me crazy.

Things You Should Know (about fandom):

1. Fandom is mean to be FUN.
2. I don't insult or judge your kinks, why should you judge mine?
3. Don't try to act all moral. If you're going to insult Wincest for immorality, then maybe you should look at yourself. Have you had sex outside of marriage? GASP. That's immoral! Let he among us without sin cast the first stone. Until then, GTFO.
4. If you're not interested in it, DON'T READ IT.
5. It's all FICTION. I suspect less than 1% of those who write incest would actually condone it in real life. Or do it themselves. That number may even be less than .05%. Writing doesn't mean you approve. Otherwise, the very fact that you watch a show about a serial killer (take Heroes or Dexter or any procedural for example) clearly indicates that you condone serial killers. Let's be logical, folks.
6. If you're going to insult one fandom's use of incest, why not insult them all? Why must you focus on this one? It's because it's known. The show itself mocks it. Thus, you are not showing intelligence. You are evidence of bandwagon reactions to something unknown.
7. There is a fine line between acknowledging weird or unusual and perhaps not appropriate behavior and being mean/rude. I admit, I recoil a bit when I see people with "Jensen Ackles" tattooed across their back. It's not me and it seems a bit extreme. But I am not judging the person. Do I think the action is probably not appropriate? Yeah. But it is by no means against the law and I suspect those people are in their right minds. Who hasn't done something entirely illogical or emotional? They feel a connection with that person. It's not harming you and it's not harming me. There is no need to insist on calling them crazy and then leaping to the conclusion all fans are. The same can be said for being a participant in fandom or for, more specifically, fandom kinks. I don't get mpreg at all. It's weird and not my cup of tea. SO I DON'T READ IT (referring back to #4). But if someone on my flist writes/reads it? That's ok with me. I don't call them crazy. It's entirely implausible. But I still would never call them crazy for enjoying it.

I could go on with this all day, I think. I've just had it up to HERE with Supernatural fans, people who claim to be Supernatural fans, the meta on the show, and all the others who sit back and judge the show and its fans. When I first joined fandom 5 years ago, it was fun. These days, I find it less so. The bitter in-fighting and the brutal attacks of fans (and writers/execs) makes it a hostile place to be most days. Now, I don't let someone declaring I am crazy stop me. Or even bother me most of the time (in that I don't feel ashamed or guilty). But man, is all this bullshit getting on my nerves.

So, I just want to make this clear. And please, if this bothers you, by all means defriend me. I don't want you either then if you can't accept me as a whole being and can't realize I'm not insisting you read/write it.

This quiz reminded me of a brilliant little quote from S2E12 of Kyle XY. Declan and Lori are duking it out again, and Lori's BFF shouts out, "For the love of Peter Petrelli!" It made me giggle. She then goes on to talk about the 'bromance' between Kyle and Declan and says, "Let's call it Keclan." Lori and Hillary are total slashers even if they don't know it. Declan+Kyle=true bromance ♥.

Also, the new SPN photos? I want my show right now!!!
mf_luder_xf: (KC omgyay)
Ok. So there's this show. Called Avenue Q. You heard of it? It won a few Tony's a few years ago. Brought about classics like The Internet is for Porn. Lines like 'my girlfriend who lives in Vancouver, she sucks like a Hoover'. Great, huh?

Well, now we have another special song from this show that goes well with Supernatural. This is good no matter what fandom or any and all pairings you like. It's just good clean humor. I fucking laughed my ass off. The creator did a great job nailing down Sam's faces with the voice and the Dean/Cassie scenes...OMFG. Just...just watch.

If You Were Gay

In other news, I still DESPISE the title for SPN ep 2 of next season. It's worse than..."Jump the Shark" or "Sunshine Days". *headdesk*

An ok, I couldn't resist! Here's a clip from the actual show. The Internet is for Porn

Ok, the August 15th ed of The Advocate. You all should buy it for the hott manly pictures in it.

But beyond that, I found several interesting things in the magazine. And you know, I am super tempted to subscribe. Except...well, I don't subscribe to any magazines. LOL And I can't have that coming to my dorm room.

Advocate ramblings (some good things for Wincesters, or those who are fans of my philosophical sex thoughts) )

I also ate a spider today. Damn. It was gross. Also--I just read one of the best J2 RPS fics ever. *nods enthusiatically* All revolving around Jensen singing. And since I have listed to this song (points to music) a billion and one times and have fallen in love with the one teeny tiny solo (3 words) Jensen sings, this fic was like GUH! cause I so know what Jared went through. I'd want to maul Jensen too. *runs away because she really isn't creepy obsessive like that* Anyway--go read. The Song on Track 5

I am very sad at the turn out for drabble requests. Only five of you? Is that cause you all missed that post, you don't care, or I only have like 5 readers? LOL Anyway, if you are just seeing this bit, see my last post and please, make a request.

Anyway. We now have some good ole SPN fic to post. I am an impatient woman (or so I've been told). Again, my online persona and RL are like polar opposites because in RL? I can outlast anyone. I learned that from getting picked on. Wait them out and they fucking can't touch you.

Erm, ok. Didn't mean to go into detail there and bore you with my life experiances. Forgive?

Bring on the fic, they cry!!

Ok, so you can thank or blame [livejournal.com profile] rhymephile for this. Me, I'm thanking her.

In this post, she alluded to Tom of Finland, and despite being a slasher, I had no clue about homoerotic art, so I asked her who this person was, etc. She gave me the link to the site. And so I browsed and ended up cracking up at some of the art. And I thought I'd share with those of you who would be interested.

The funniest interview ever (Jared and Jensen) : Jensen's gay. I've noticed it on set, says Jared with a grin.

Something else. So you people know Jensen sings, right? Well, he does. And I managed to get a version of his one song recorded for real (courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] supernatural_tv) and ok, his voice is perfectly suited for Texas, for country music. It fits that twang and emotional nasal sound. So maybe, he's not awful. But when you listen to opera all day, it grates a little on the ears. LOL

And now a huge slash meme, courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] crecd060.
